John Clare, long forgotten, is now acknowledged as one of England's finest nature poets and Janet Wheeler's settings of five poems by Clare, Time becomes a song, encompass his range. Unlike contemporaries such as Wordsworth he was and remained part of the working class, recording the impact of social change on agricultural life. At the time of writing he was a labourer and heard people singing all the time; milkmaids, farm workers and people in public houses. Clare wrote down many of these ballads, which formed the basis for his poetry.
The programme will also include works by Benjamin Britten, Alexander Campkin, Ronald Corp, Jonathan Dove and Miriam Mackie and contemporary pieces from the CoMA singers' repertoire, in contrast to Renaissance pieces by Adrian Batten, William Byrd and Thomas Tallis.
