Janette Ruocco joined Illumination as their Musical Director in May 2009. Since then she has gone on to work with the group in an expanding range of repertoire and musical experiences, including the group’s first concert tour abroad in July 2011 to Liguria, Italy. Janette brings a wealth of choral music experience to the post as a conductor, singer and composer and this, together with a talent for searching out repertoire and creative construction of musical programmes, mean that under her watch the choir has gone from strength to strength.
In addition to being Musical Director of Illumination, Janette works with three choirs on a weekly basis - The Meljon Singers, Braintree Choral Society and the adult training choir, Harlow Chorus Academy. Her work with young singers includes extensive vocal workshops under the national Sing Up initiative, including a two-year Chorister Outreach project with Chelmsford Cathedral, a Singing communities programme on Canvey Island with the education department from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and two singing leader training courses for teachers with the abcd (Association of British Choral Directors). She is the Director of the youth choir provision for Essex Music Services, which comprises four levels of choral provision for 5 to 19 year olds.
Janette has a BMus from Sheffield University, a PGCE from Goldsmiths’ and an MA in Choral Education from Roehampton University. She is a practitioner council member of the abcd and a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
